With a cult like following, the Grey’s Anatomy- an American medical-themed TV series which premiered in 2005 clearly continues to amass viewership that transcends the field of medicine. Upon gaining prominence, the series was rated as an all-time favorite since its debut. The Nielsen ratings, puts the viewership of the second season at an average of 19.44 million per episode, thus ranking fifth overall. In fact, an episode of the series- “It’s the End of the World” ranks the most watched episode with 37.88 million views.
Deriving its concept from Gray’s Anatomy, a classical text by Henry Gray published in 1858; the Grey’s Anatomy dwells on the lives and personal relationships of medical personnel; and how they strife to be successful even through the rigors of work. Initially, the series sought to be diverse in its casting but the cast has been subjected to changes. In 2018, the series premiered a fifteenth season making it one of the longest TV series around. The longevity of the series has been celebrated by many critics as it has been dubbed a phenomenal especially for not losing its touch.
In its plot, the series centers around a new intern (Meredith Grey) that happens to be a daughter of a celebrated general surgeon. The plot captures her time as a new intern, resident and her interaction with other physicians who all struggle to achieve balance in work, personal and interpersonal relationships. Interestingly, the series adds a love twist to the mix as many of the casts are entangled with a love interest.
In terms of critic and awards, the series has been celebrated for its uniqueness since inception. Remarkably, the series fares well as critics such as Rotten Tomatoes, Emily VanDerWerff (of The A.V. Club) among others passed admiring comments on the series- its content, concept and creativity. In addition, the series is a proud recipient of many awards and notable recognition. In 2005, a cast of the series was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress, a nomination she received till 2009. Also, the series received a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series in 2006; and many of the casts continue to receive recognition for various roles.
As of July 2012, the series has been nominated for 25 Primetime Emmy Awards with at least one every year. Notably, since its premiere the movie series has received ten Golden Globe award nominations; with another for Best Drama series in 2016. No doubt, the series is a huge success as it continually amasses viewing-time and commercial success. This feat that remains valid as the show is one of the highest earning series with US$2.67 million and US$2.75 million per half-hour in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
