Pokemon, the video game franchise with more than two decades in the gaming business, a beloved fuzzy, electrically charged, rodent-like character, Pikachu, numerous spin-offs, and a world famous slogan “gotta catch ’em all” can be considered to have really caught it all when it comes to holding the attention of a huge population of gamers worldwide.
Prone to elicit a feeling of nostalgia among people born in the 90’s, the game Pokemon created by Satoshi Tajiri and developed by Game Freak, for the company Nintendo Game Boy, made its debut in Japan in 1996, with the version Pokemon Red and Green. Well received and generating swift sales, Pokemon Red and Green was quickly followed up with the release of another version, Pokemon Blue which had better sound and graphics. Soon, the games were followed with the release of card games, titled, Pokemon Trading Card Game and this was produced by Media Factory in 1996.
The Pokemon games went on to be adapted into comic books called manga , which are graphic novels rendered with unique storylines and a different interpretation of the fictional Pokemon world. Soaring on its increasing popularity, the Pokemon franchise doubled up with the release of an anime (which I fondly remember) in 1997. The anime, based on the game, followed a main character Satoshi (dubbed Ash for English audience), who is quite similar to Satoshi, the game’s creator. The anime rose in popularity and was released and well received in North America in 1998. A little after 1998, The Pokemon Company began its operations, and together with Nintendo, these two companies are the Pokemon game publishers.
There are a lot of choices when it comes to Pokemon games and that equals more fun for the gaming community. Pokemon games are role-playing video games(RPGs) , in which players take on the role of a character or some characters in an imaginary game world, and take on a quest, thereby following a certain narrative. The main Pokemon games are the role-playing games that span over eight generations (grouping based on game’s release dates) and are played on a variety of gaming consoles such as the Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch. Games in the Nintendo franchise have been extremely successful and their success sparked production of spin-off games released on Nintendo handheld consoles and PC.
Having sold nearly 3 million copies on the Game Boy platform and over two-hundred and seventy-nine million units as of 2016, Pokemon is in no way backing down on its slogan to catch ’em all and has earned a spot as one of the best-selling video games in history.
